Dr. Stephen J. Gordon, M.D.

Dr. Gordon graduated magna cum laude from Temple University in 1974 with a B.A. in Political Science. He then attended New York Medical College, receiving his M.D. degree after 3 years in 1977, then going on to complete an internship in internal medicine in 1978 at the Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Gordon followed his internship by serving his country as a Captain in the United States Army stationed in Karlsruhe, Germany for 2 years, tending to U.S. soldiers and their dependents. Upon his return to the States, Dr. Gordon studied opthalmology and completed his residency at New York Medical College, serving as Chief Resident at Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx, NY.

Dr. Gordon came to Central New Jersey in the Fall of 1983 to join Dr. William Rubin, a comprehensive ophthalmologist nationally known for his work with the children’s disorders of strabismus and amblyopia. Dr. Gordon has been an active member of the medical staffs of Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center and St. Peter’s University Medical Center since 1983. In the mid-1980’s Dr. Gordon served as a clinical instructor for the ophthalmology residences of both New York Medical College and the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary. During that period Dr. Gordon also worked in the office of internationally renowned ophthalmologist Dr. Charles Kelman of New York City. Since 1990 Dr. Gordon has served as the Chief of the Ophthalmology Section within the Department of Surgery at St. Peter’s University Medical Center.

Recognizing the need for a purely ophthalmic diagnostic and surgical ambulatory center, Dr. Gordon was one of 3 founders of the Somerset Eye Institute. The Center–located on Easton Avenue in Somerset, New Jersey–is one of the premier eye centers in New Jersey, and it serves the needs of dozens of ophthalmologists from Central New Jersey and beyond. As a founder and board member, Dr. Gordon also serves as Medical Director of the Somerset Eye Institute.

Dr. Gordon is committed to staying current with the latest trends in his field through study, contact with colleagues, and attending seminars and continuing education courses. He is a member of the American Medical Association and the New Jersey Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Gordon is board certified by the American Board of Opthalmology. He is certified in the use of the Visx and Intralase lasers for use in refractive laser vision correction. Additionally, Dr. Gordon is certified to use the latest in premium multi and accommodative intraocular lenses for cataract surgery.

A native of Queens, New York, Dr. Gordon, his wife and two children call Central New Jersey home. His recreational pursuits include skiing and cycling.

Susan Gootnick | Opthalmic Technician

Susan Gootnick joined Ophthalmology Surgical Associates in 1984. Susan is a certified opthalmic technician. Susan assists with taking patient histories and vision testing. Susan also performs automated visual histories and vision testing. Susan also performs automated visual field examinations and retinal nerve layer analysis using our GDX machine, both of which are vital in glaucoma evaluations. Additionally, Susan maintains our contact lens inventory, and has instructed hundreds of patients int he insertion, removal and maintenance of contact lends. Susan also assists Dr. Gordon in minor office surgical procedures as well as laser treatments.

Originally from Brooklyn, Sue and her family made their way to Central New Jersey in the late 1970’s. Sue’s favorite pastimes include reading, watching ice skating competitions, and enjoying the company of her many friends and extensive family.

Joanne Avant | Office Administrator

Joanne Avant started working as a receptionist at the front desk 5 years ago. Her duties include making appointments, receiving patients, chart management and interfacing with patients on the telephone. Her sunny disposition and credentials led to her being hired on the spot!

Joanne’s passion is singing. Whether it is a professional gig, solo or choir church event or even in the office, Joanne is always vocalizing. A native of Central New Jersey, Joanne is also very involved with her family and friends.
